Yates Field Agreement

As the huge Yates Field near Iraan came in during 1926, it quickly overwhelmed available infrastructure, threatening a wasteful race to drain the reservoir under the traditional “rule of capture.” However, in 1927, an innovative private agreement introduced voluntary proration in the Field, restricting output to prevent surface leaks and protect correlative rights based on acreage. When compliance strained, the Texas Railroad Commission enforced it by state law in 1928, creating a model for oilfield management statewide. While this conservation effort saved enormous oil and gas resources, it also sidelined independent producers lacking pipeline access, storage, and capital. Many were forced to sell out to majors, concentrating control and accelerating industry consolidation.
