Description

Lloyd was born in Ireland in 1854 and emigrated to the US in 1876, where he pursued various livelihoods, ranging from sheepherding to dealing in books, coins, and stamps. For many years, however, he worked as a naturalist in Texas. Elected as an associate member of the American Ornithological Union in 1885, Lloyd participated in the 1884-85 Cooke/Merriam Mississippi River flyway bird migration study, collected specimens for George Sennett (1887), and published an article in The Auk, “Birds of Tom Green and Concho Counties, Texas” (1887). Along with fellow scientists Henry Attwater, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Harry Oberholser, and others, Lloyd assisted Vernon Bailey in the major work, Biological Survey of Texas (1905), spending 496 days in the field, crossing 4 ecoregions, submitting 51 survey reports, and providing 1181 mammal specimens.

Location Notes

San Angelo, perhaps along the Concho River walk, would make a good marker location to honor William Lloyd. This location would tie to his 1887 publication, "Birds of Tom Green and Concho Counties, Texas", his data submissions for the 1884-85 Mississippi River Valley Migration Study, and his home base for the Sennett collections of 1887.
