William G. "W.G." Turner
Topics
Description
William G. Turner ran a furniture store in Tarrant County. He helped found the Fort Worth Humane Society (1905), and was engaged in conservation efforts statewide, serving as the lobbyist for the Texas Game and Fish Protective Association.
With the Humane Society, he helped lead efforts to build water troughs for horses and mules, to rescue livestock, draft animals and pets from starvation, neglect, and physical abuse, and to provide shade and water at the Fort Worth stockyards.
With the Association, Turner worked to design and press for the 1907 Game Law, which imposed bag limits, authorized hunting licenses, appointed special game wardens, and tried to limit market hunting (through affirming state ownership of wildlife and banning sale and transport of protected animals).
Location Notes
A marker could be placed at his burial site, in Oakwood Cemetery (evidently the West Oakwood Section, Block 45), at 701 Grand Avenue, in Fort Worth.
