Description
Growing up in a pioneer family in the area along the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, Watt Matthews helped manage the Lambshead Ranch from 1941 through 1997. He supported historical preservation of early schools, dugouts, homes and cemeteries. He also carried out land restoration practices, such as cross fencing, water development, deferred grazing, pond construction, erosion control, cactus grubbing and controlled burning of mesquite. As well, he was involved in livestock protection efforts through screwworm and tick eradication, and reintroduction of Longhorn cattle, wild turkey and bison.
