Description

Walter Taylor was active in the fields of ornithology, mammalogy, ecology, and conservation. He earned his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California at Berkeley, worked as a senior biologist with the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey, and served as president of the Ecological Society of American, the Wildlife Society, and the American Society of Mammalogists. In 1937, Taylor came to Texas A&M to help establish the Department of Fish and Game, create the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, and train early wildife biologists including Dan Lay, Phil Goodrum, and Rollin Baker. Faylor also worked to educate the general public about natural resource conservation, speaking widely before groups of sportsmen, farmers, ranches, and fraternal organizations.
