Description

V.L. Cory, a range botanist with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, based in Sonora, was long involved in botanical research and plant collection in the state. He is particularly known for several written works, including Biological Survey of the East Texas Big Thicket Area (1936, with H.B. Parks) and Catalogue of the Flora of the State of Texas (1937, with H.B. Parks). His early work identifying the rich, unique biodiversity of the Big Thicket helped build the case for its protection as a National Preserve in 1974.

Location Notes

Cory's work at the Sonora Research Station could be honored with a marker at its entrance, at 395 County Road 760; Sonora, Texas 76950. Perhaps a separate marker for Leo Merrill, who worked at the Station later could be placed at the headquarters.
