Years: 1822–1882 | Role: Scientist | County: Waller

Topics

Description

Elihu Hall made some of the earliest known collections of plants in East Texas. His specimens were provided to Asa Gray, among others. In 1873, Hall brought together his findings on 861 species and published Plantae Texanae: A List of the Plants Collected in Eastern Texas in 1872, and Distributed to Subscribers. Several Texas species bear his name, including Hall’s bulrush, Hall’s dalea, and Hall’s witch grass.

Location Notes

Mr. Hall collected specimens in areas near Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Those places may be too large and general, so perhaps a marker in Hempstead, a smaller town where he also collected, would be more precise. Hempstead's Gazebo park might be a public site available for a sign.
