Years: 1945 | Role: Habitat | County: Hudspeth

Topics

Description

In 1945, the State of Texas acquired the Sierra Diablo Wildlife Management Area, covering 11,625 acres that straddle Hudspeth and Culberson Counties near Van Horn. It was the first WMA in the state, and was purchased to preserve and manage Texas’ last population of desert bighorn sheep.

Location Notes

The Sierra Diablo WMA is closed to general public access and use. Visitors follow a state escort, typically for permitted hunts. The escort meeting point is at IH-10 Exit 129, the Allamoore Exit, 11 miles west of Van Horn. This turnoff may provide the most visible marker site close to the WMA.
