Description

Roy Bedichek was a naturalist, writer and educator whose work helped shape how Texans understand and value the state’s lands and wildlife. He spent close to three decades as director of the University Interscholastic League, influencing public education statewide. Late in life, Bedichek emerged as a major literary figure with his books, Adventures with a Texas Naturalist (1947) and Karankaway Country (1950), which mixed field observation, ecological insight, reflective prose, and a deep respect for native plants, animals, and habitat. Together with his friends, J. Frank Dobie and Walter Prescott Webb, he helped build a lasting tradition of engagement with Texas history, culture and landscape.
