Robert A. Vines was the director of the Houston Museum of Natural Science from 1943 through 1956, curating and expanding its collections, and intitiating a children’s educational program. He later founded the Robert A. Vines Environmental Science Center at the Spring Branch Independent School District. He also wrote widely on botanical themes, publishing books that included Native East Texas Trees (1953), Trees, Shrubs and Woody Vines of the Southwest (1960), Trees of East Texas (1977), Trees of North Texas (1982), and Trees of Central Texas (1984).
