Ray Sasser had a forty-year career in outdoor journalism, writing for The Port Arthur News, The Dallas Times Herald, The Dallas Morning News, Lone Star Outdoor News, and Shooting Sportsman, as well as publishing 11 books, including Texas Quail. He was a proponent of catch-and-release fishing, and was recognized for his contributions through awards such as the Dallas Coastal Conservation Association Conservation Sportsman of the Year (2016) and the T. Boone Pickens Lifetime Sportsman Award (2016), as well as induction into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame (2016).
