Topics
Description
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1872, Peter Hohnstedt became a celebrated Texas landscape painter. While he had early training under Frank Duveneck and Victor Casnelli, he was largely self-taught. He moved to New Orleans in 1914, and worked in Los Angeles and Seattle in the 1920s. In 1928, he moved to Comfort, Texas, and became known for oil paintings of the Hill Country, Pecos, Big Bend, and Chinati Mountains. His pieces can be seen in the Witte Museum in San Antonio and the Stark Museum in Orange, Texas.
Location Notes
A view of the Chisos Mountains, similar to what was painted by Hohnstedt in roughly 1933, can be seen from the Lost Mine Trail Head, at a pull-off from Basin Junction Road in Big Bend National Park.
