Description

Oscar Charles Guessaz, a publisher, writer, hunter and conservationist, produced The Texas Field and Sportsman magazine, lobbied for the 1903 Model Game Law, urged creation of hunting licenses, and supported segregation of hunting tax revenues for game protection and propagation. He also served in leadership roles with the Texas State Sportsmen’s Association and Texas Game Protective Association. In 1901, he was one of the first Texas sportsmen to lease property (reputedly at the Hofmann Ranch near Castroville) for hunting rights, helping create a multimillion-dollar industry that now underwrites many rural lands and communities.
