Description
One of the early female botanists in Texas, Maude Jeannie Young collected plants, taught botany in Houston, and served as the Texas state botanist in 1873. In the same year, she published one of the first scientific texts devoted to Texas flora, and also one of the first penned by a Texan – Familiar Lessons in Botany, with Flora of Texas. During her career, she was in contact with a circle of fellow botanists, including Samuel Buckley, Gideon Lincecum, and George Engelmann. Unfortunately, her herbarium of Texas ferns and flowering plants, along with many of her writings, were lost in the Galveston hurricane of 1900.
