Description

Mary Young, a botanist, received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1910, and then joined the University of Texas faculty as a botany tutor. In 1912, she became the first official curator of the University’s herbarium. She collected in the central Texas region, publishing A Key to the Families and Genera of the Wild Plants of Austin, Texas (UT Bulletin 1754) and The Seed Plants, Ferns and Fern Allies of the Austin Region (UT Bulletin 2065) in 1917. She also collected specimens in the Panhandle (1917) and in the Trans-Pecos Area (1914, 1915, 1916, and 1918).
