Little Cypress Reservoir Dam
Topics
Description
August and October of 1988 saw a pair of defeats of bond referenda sponsored by the Little Cypress Utility District. The District had posted the referenda to fund a dam on Little Cypress Creek, upstream of Caddo Lake. However, landowners, taxpayers, conservationists, and both Republican and Democratic activists successfully mounted resistance to the proposed dam. Opposition centered on the lack of need for the water, private property concerns about condemnation of reservoir land, high economic costs for building the dam, and severe environmental impacts.
Location Notes
A marker could be on Highway 154, where it crosses Little Cypress Creek. The actual dam site would have been in the vicinity of the Bear Creek Smokehouse, downstream of Highway 154, between Harleton and Nesbitt. The dam's reservoir, however, would have reached far west, likely near the Harrison/Gregg County Line.
