Years: 1897–1984 | Role: Author | County: Travis

Description

L.A. Wilke was an early Texas outdoor writer, providing hunting, fishing and related stories to a variety of magazines. He wrote for Field & Stream, and later served as assistant director for Information and Education at Texas Game & Fish, and its successor agency, Texas Parks & Wildlife. He was deeply concerned about overhunting, especially after having seen the abuse and impact on wild turkey populations. He helped organize the Texas Outdoor Writers Association in 1959, and was widely credited as a mentor among other outdoor writers.
