Description

The artist Karl Frederich Hermann Lungkwitz created a series of oil paintings of Enchanted Rock around the year 1864. Born in Halle, Prussia (now Saxony-Anhalt), he studied under Adrian Ludwig Richter at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. He participatied in the 1849 May Uprising in Dresden, and subsequently emigrated to the United States, settling in Fredericksburg, Texas in 1851. He later took up photography, running a San Antonio studio, and serving as a photographer for the Texas General Land Office.

Location Notes

Lungkwitz is in part remembered for his landscape paintings of Enchanted Rock. A marker could be put there, at 16710 Ranch Road 965; Fredericksburg, Texas 78624
