Description

Jack Cowan was a celebrated painter of Texas landscapes, often showing hunting and fishing scenes in watercolor and oil. His work is documented in two books, The Golden Crescent (1969) and John P. Cowan (1992), featured in stamp series for Trout Unlimited (1982), the Gulf Coast Conservation Association (1983, 1986, 1991) and the Texas Turkey Federation (1985, 1988), and is recognized by the Texas Legislature (Texas State Artist, 1978-79). Aside from producing art about Texas landscapes and outdoor sports enthusiasts, Cowan was also involved in advocating for the Texas Red Drum Conservation Act of 1977.

Location Notes

Cowan maintained a studio in Rockport, often painted in the area, and was considered part of the "Rockport Gang" of painters, along with Al Barnes and Herb Booth. Perhaps a good place for a marker would be at the Rockport Center for the Arts, at 204 South Austin Street.
