Description

Joe Truett grew up in the Angelina River valley of East Texas, earned a Ph.D. in wildife biology, and spent years doing research on the ecological impacts of human activity. He is well-known for writing The Land of Bears and Honey: A Natural History of East Texas with Dan Lay, a recipient of the Texas Literary Festival Award for Nonfiction, and the annual publication award from the Texas chapter of the Wildlife Society. He also wrote Circling Back: Chronicle of a Texas River Valley about his youth in the Angelina River Valley.

Location Notes

Lufkin, as the county seat for Angelina County, might provide a good spot for a marker commemorating Truett, given his attachment to his boyhood in the area, as shown by his writings. Perhaps the Kurth Memorial Library would be a good place in Lufkin to celebrate an author.
