Description

Born in Germany, Jacob Kuechler immigrated to Texas in 1847, settling eventually in Fredericksburg. He worked as a surveyor and farmer, and during the Civil War, fought as a Unionist in the Battle of the Nueces. Following the war, Kuechler served as Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office. During his life he became a pioneering dendrochronologist, researching the records of tree rings which revealed a history of recurrent, and severe, droughts in Texas.

Location Notes

Kuechler made his tree-ring survey in Fredericksburg, so perhaps a marker should be on the grounds of the county seat there.
