Henry Frank Moore

Years: 1867–1948 | Role: Marine Biologist | County: Matagorda

Topics

Description

Born in Philadelphia, Moore studied zoology and marine invertebrates at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his Ph.D. there in 1891. He joined the U.S. Fish Commission, and became known as a national expert in oyster and sponge research.

At the request of W.G. Sterett, Texas Game, Fish and Oyster Commissioner, he conducted extensive surveys of Matagorda (1907) and Lavaca Bays (1913). Working with Ernest Danglade, T. Van de Bogert and others in Texas, he undertook triangulation to locate major oyster reefs, and used chain-dragging and volumetric sampling to measure oyster production.

Moore was an advocate for returning empty shells to the bay to serve as cultch for reef restoration, and he also spoke up for private stewardship of bay bottoms to prevent abuse under the Tragedy of the Commons. His surveys leave a baseline for oyster conditions before heavy harvest, dredging and channelization in Texas bays.

Location Notes

Moore's first Texas oyster and estuary surveys occurred in Matagorda Bay, during 1904-05. Perhaps a marker could honor that origin story with a sign at the City by the Sea Museum, at 401 Commerce Street, in Palacios, Texas.
