Description

Born in Yoakum, Texas, Hart Stilwell was a journalist, novelist, outdoor writer, and close friend of J. Frank Dobie and Roy Bedichek. He edited the Brownsville Herald, contributed to Field and Stream, Outdoor Life and Sports Afield. In his seminal nonfiction works, Hunting and Fishing in Texas (1946) and Fishing in Mexico (1948), Stilwell didn’t just provide guides to sportsmen, he also documented a vanishing wilderness. After his death in 1975, several drafts of a manuscript were discovered and compiled into the book, The Glory of the Silver King: The Golden Age of Tarpon Fishing (2011), a tribute to a magnificent fish disappearing due to overfishing and habitat loss.
