Description

H.C. Oberholser, a scientist with the U.S. Bureau of Biolotical Survey, collected specimens widely (many now found in the Smithsonian Institution), helped initiate the Winter Waterfowl Survey, and drafted The Bird Life of Texas, a landmark publication on avian distribution, lives and habitat. Dr. Oberholser corresponded regularly with the Rockport ornithologist, Connie Hagar, as both studied the remarkable southward migration of ruby-throated hummingbirds, which carries it 500-600 miles in 18-22 hours of steady flight across the Gulf, launching from Rockport.

Location Notes

With Oberholser's interest in hummingbirds, it seems appropriate to put a marker at the site of the Rockport HummerBird Celebration: Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce ; 319 Broadway Street; Rockport, Texas 78382.
