Harold Scarlett, a reporter for The Houston Post newspaper, from the 1950s through the 1980s, was assigned to be a full-time environmental columnist in 1970. He covered a variety of stories concerning air pollution, hazardous waste, and public health. He is remembered for his persistence and courage in covering controversial and under-reported environmental issues that arose in the heavily industrialized and rapidly developing Houston area.
