Harold Scarlett, a reporter for The Houston Post newspaper, from the 1950s through the 1980s, was assigned to be a full-time environmental columnist in 1970. He covered a variety of stories concerning air pollution, hazardous waste, and public health. He is remembered for his persistence and courage in covering controversial and underreported environmental issues that arose in the heavily industrialized and rapidly developing Houston area.
