Topics

Description

Gustav Wilhelm Belfrage, a Swedish-born insect collector and naturalist, immigrated to the United States around 1860 and eventually settled near Norse, in Bosque County, Texas. During his life, he collected thousands of insect specimens which he sold to collectors and scientists worldwide, with some held in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the British Museum of Natural History. Several species were named in his honor, including the moth, Caloptilia belfragella and the beetle, Peploglyptus belfragei.

Location Notes

Norse, Texas, where Belfrage lived, appears to have mostly disappeared in the years since. The closest town is Clifton. A marker at the Clifton Heritage Plaza, a public space dedicated to history, might make sense.
