Bill Daniel was an attorney and politician, serving as Texas State Representative (1949-53), and as Governor of Guam (1961-63). He made significant contributions to the protection of the Big Thicket by organizing and hosting massive Big Thicket Treks, based out of his family’s Plantation Ranch near Romayor. These trail rides brought thousands of visitors, including politicians and journalists and naturalists (among them, Lance Rosier), to the wild Trinity bottomlands. In this way, he helped the public appreciate southeast Texas as a cultural and ecological treasure, generating the wide support required for the creation of the Big Thicket National Preserve in 1974.
Location Notes
US 90's Trinity River Bridge, with its public boat ramp and park, might provide a good location for a marker in honor of Bill Daniel. Located just west of Liberty, where Daniel practiced law and served as the area's state representative, this site would allow the public to view and visit the Trinity River and bottomlands that Daniel appreciated and promoted.
