Description

Dr. Fred Gehlbach was a long-time Baylor University professor of biology, ecology and environmental studies who contributed to ecological and behavioral studies of Texas birds, particularly the eastern screech owl. He was known for his generous mentorship, through teaching students, guiding nature walks, writing a monthly article in the Waco Tribune-Herald, consulting with the Cameron Zoo, and giving his studies to the Mayborn Museum. One of his lasting contributions was his stewardship of a 15-acre sanctuary and owl study site in the bottoms of Sugar Creek, in Woodway, Texas.

Location Notes

A marker could be put at the Gehlbach owl study site and preserve, located off Bosque Road; Woodway, Texas 76712, shown in these coordinates. Another possibility might be Cameron Park, where Gehlbach was active as well.
