Fred Jones was a cotton farmer and amateur botanist. He made major contributions to the study of the plants of the Texas Coastal Bend, contributing more than 2500 plant specimens to the Corpus Christi Museum of Science, and acquiring and preparing many of the items in the Welder Wildlife Foundation herbarium. His scholarship is reflected in his book, Flora of the Texas Coastal Bend (1975), covering over 1100 species and varieties of wildflowers, shrubs, trees, vines and other plants found in the area. Aside from his botanical studies, Jones was also involved in conservation efforts, helping found the Audubon Outdoor Club.
