Description
Ellen Quillin was a teacher and founder of the Witte Museum. Her role with the Museum began with efforts to raise funds to purchase the Henry Attwater natural history collection, which became the core of its holdings. She went on to serve as director from 1926 through 1960. During her tenure, the Museum built a reptile garden, and sponsored scientific expeditions around the state to study flora, fauna, and prehistoric rock art. Outside of the Museum, Quillin helped develop the San Antonio Botanical Garden and the San Antonio Audubon Society, and also wrote as a botanist, publishing works that included Texas Wild Flowers (1928).
