Description
Eileen Crain Sullivan was a rancher and banker and philanthropist who donated 1847 acres near Centerville in 1985 to the State of Texas. By 2001 the parcel was opened by Texas Parks and Wildlife to create Fort Boggy State Park. The land had been taken out of cultivation in the 1930s, to allow it to revert to a natural state. The term “Fort Boggy” refers to a palisade fort built in 1840 by early settlers from Tennessee and Mississippi to protect against Native American raids. The park consists of a mix of post oak/hickory/elm woodlands, rolling hills, savannah grassland and wetlands.
