Edward Muegge "Buck" Schiwetz
Topics
Description
Born in Cuero, Schiwetz received an architectural design degree from Texas A&M, and attended the Art Student’s League in New York City. In his career, he began drafting and rendering for architecture firms, and creating images for advertisements and illustrations for magazines. He came to Houston in 1929, joining the marketing firm, Wilkinson, Schiwetz and Tips. Throughout his career, Schiwetz focused on the varied scenes of Texas, both gritty and scenic, including oilfields, courthouses, missions, cotton gins, fishing wharfs, farmsteads and ranches. Schiwetz’ artwork, typically watercolor mixed with pen and ink, was widely seen in calendars and magazines from Humble Oil and Refining. His work can be seen in a number of books, including Buck Schiwetz’ Texas: Drawings and Paintings (1960), The Schiwetz Legacy: An Artist’s Tribute to Texas, 1910-1971 (1972), Buck Schiwetz’ Memories (1978), and The Artistic Legacy of Buck Schiwetz (2023).
Location Notes
A marker for Mr. Schiwetz could be placed on the Texas A&M University campus, where Schiwetz studied and later returned as artist-in-residence and as a distinguished alumnus. If put on campus, perhaps a sign near the University Press building would make sense, since several books about him were produced there (Buck Schiwetz' Memories, Buck Schiwetz' Aggieland, and The Artistic Legacy of Buck Schiwetz).
