Description

Dwight Shellman was an environmental attorney who is remembered for his service as the co-founder and long-time (1993-2006) president of the Caddo Lake Institute. Spurred by the vision and backing of the musician Don Henley (of the Eagles), Shellman helped build the Institute, and through it, organize local community support, educational ties and technical expertise. During his tenure, the Institute managed to help defeat the Daingerfield Reach Barge Canal, guide the transition of the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant into protection as the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, advocate for instream flows to feed the Lake, and secure Caddo’s recognition as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Location Notes

A sign would fit well at the site dedicated in his memory: the Dwight K. Shellman, Jr. Caddo Lake Ramsar Wetlands Visitor Center.
