Description
George Shumard was an American geologist and surgeon. In 1852, Shumard joined Capt. Randolph Marcy and Capt. George McClennan in explorations of the Red River. Two years later, he accompanied Marcy in a survey of the Big Wichita River and Brazos headwaters. In 1855, he and Capt. John Pope travelled from Indianola to San Antonio, Fort Clark, the Devil’s River, the Pecos River and west to New Mexico (1855). He also served as the Assistant State Geologist for the Texas Geological Survey from 1858 through 1861. During the course of his career, he amassed important collections of minerals, soils, fossils, shells and plants, and added to the understanding of the state’s geology.
