Delbert Devin

Years: 1920–2011 | Role: Farmer | County: Swisher

Topics

Description

Delbert Devin raised cattle, corn and cotton in Swisher County, and served as the director of the non-profit organization, STAND of Texas. In that capacity, he worked to stop the U.S. Department of Energy from proceeding with plans during the 1980s to dispose of high-level radioactive waste in the Panhandle. Devin and the group raised concerns over the risks of contamination of the Ogallala aquifer, and the region’s prime farmland.

Location Notes

STAND of Texas had its organization headquarters, where Devin worked, in space donated by corn growers in Dimmit, Texas. That town's city park seems like a sensible place to put a marker.
