Description

Cynthia and George Mitchell played a critical role in protecting the federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, with stewardship and protection of a east Texas pineywoods tract since 1964, through understory clearing, invasive species control, native replantings, and prescribed burning. In recent years, the parcel, now known as the Cook’s Branch Conservancy and amounting to 7000 acres, provides habitat for the largest concentration of the rare birds on private lands to the west of the Mississippi. The Conservancy’s and family’s success has been recognized by the esteemed Leopold Award.
