Col. William Greene Sterett

Sterett was a newspaper owner, editor and writer. He purchased and operated the Dallas Evening Times in 1880, and created the Dallas Times-Herald by merger in 1888. In 1889, he became a colorful and well-connected correspondent in Washington, D.C. for the Dallas Morning News, and for many years wrote a column for the News, entitled, “State Press”.

During the 1910-14 and 1919-20 periods, he served as the outspoken and passionate commissioner of the Texas Game, Fish and Oyster Commission. He helped promote the State Fish Hatchery, presented public aquarium exhibits at the State Fair, and pursued several efforts to reduce hunting pressure, including lobbying to keep bird bag limits low, to bar sales of game, to increase warden pay, and to deputize train conductors as game officers.
