Description
In 1985, rancher and philanthropist C.G. Johnson gave the State of Texas 23,000 acres in Brewster County to develop Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Ten years later, he gave a 5301-acre parcel to the State to create Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Elephant Mountain has been an important tract for desert bighorn recovery, while Mason Mountain has been a key study site for the interaction of African and native ungulates.
