Description

From 1986 through 2011, Chester Smith served as the warden for the Audubon Texas sanctuary on Sundown Island (now known as Chester Island Bird Sanctuary), a major rookery in Matagorda Bay. His work in controlling invasive fire ants, planting native vegetation, managing shoreline erosion, was critical in protecting the Island, and especially in restoring populations of the once-endangered brown pelican.
