Cecelia Emilia Seixas

Years: 1883–1900 | Role: Advocate | County: Galveston

Topics

Description

In 1898, together with Estelle Cannon Hertford, Ms Seixas co-founded the first Audubon Society group in Galveston. Predating the National Audubon Society’s establishment, the Galveston organization was focused on fighting the widespread killing of coastal birds for the sale of feathers to the international millinery trade. By 1899, the Galveston Audubon Society had 75 members on its roster, and was meeting twice a month. Tragically, 16-year old Cecelia drowned in the 1900 hurricane.

Location Notes

Ms Seixas is buried with her family in Galveston's historic Evergreen Cemetery. Perhaps that would be a good site for a marker.
