Description
TU (now TXU Energy) and York Research built the 34.3 MW Big Spring Wind Farm, featuring 4 Vestas V66 turbines, in 1999. This was the same year that the state enacted a utility restructuring bill setting a goal for renewable energy to provide at least 3% of the state’s energy portfolio by 2009, triggering rapid and large growth in the state’s non-fossil energy sources. The facility was one of the earlier grid-connected, commercial-scale wind farms in the state.
Location Notes
Since the wind turbines are on private property, off major roads, perhaps the best place to put a marker would be at Big Spring State Park headquarters, which appears to be high, with a good overlook that would include the wind farm.
