Description
Arthur Schott, a German-born engineer and naturalist, was on staff with the U.S. Boundary Commission during roughly the 1851-55 period. He worked as a “special scientific collector” at the side of fellow naturalists Charles Parry and John Bigelow, serving under the command of William H. Emory. Schott’s topographic and hydrographic drawings and field notes, together with his plant, animal, and geological specimens, have left an important baseline record along the Rio Grande, from El Paso to the Gulf (as well as west to the Pacific) before extensive development and change.
Location Notes
A marker for Mr. Schott could be placed in Rio Grande City, at Fort Ringgold County Park. This is a public spot quite close to Ringgold Barracks, a reference point (see Vol. I, Ch. VII, p. 137 of the Boundary Report) for Schott's work surveying and collecting along the U.S. / Mexico border.
