Description

Arthur Temple, III, led a major timber firm, served in the Texas House of Representatives (1973-1980), and sat on the Texas Railroad Commission (1985-1986). Temple was one of the first forest industry executives to support the creation of the Big Thicket National Preserve, and was also generous in helping protect the 19,000-acre Boggy Slough and the 5600-acre Roy E. Larsen Sandylands Sanctuary. To the south, he and his wife, Ellen, received the prestigious 2011 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas for transforming an abused tract near Freer, Texas. The legacy of Arthur Temple and his family continues through grants of the T.L.L. Temple Foundation, and research and education at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University.
