Description

Fullingim was a journalist, publisher, and advocate for protection of the Big Thicket. He worked at a variety of newspapers, including the Wichita Eagle, Miami Herald, Galveston Tribune, Panhandle Herald, and Pampa Daily News. From 1950 through 1974, he published the Kountze News, featuring his column, “The Printer Fires Both Barrels”. He documented the cut-out-and-get-out policies of timber companies, shamed politicians for their alliances with lumber firms, and publicized the mysterious ghostly lights on Bragg Road, which brought many visitors to explore and appreciate the Thicket. His gravestone reads, “His favorite Kountze news story for twenty-five years was the Big Thicket.”

Location Notes

A sign honoring Fullingim could be placed at his grave, in the Old Hardin Cemetery, southwest of Kountze, off of Route 326.
