Description
Tony Amos was an oceanographer who worked at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory at Columbia University (1963-1976), and later at the Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas (1976-2017), with a long career invested in measuring ocean circulation and salinity. Beginning in 1978, he also began a meticulous survey of 7 miles of Mustang Island, recording bird populations, turtle strandings, and a wide array of jetsam and flotsam. In 1982, Amos founded the Animal Rehabilitation Keep, a sanctuary for insured sea turtles, marine mammals, and coastal birds, with special experience in responding to cold-stunning events.
Location Notes
A 7-mile stretch of Mustang Island was honored as Tony Amos City Beach in 2015 for his decades of environmental monitoring and wildlife rescue there. The entrance to the coast at Beach Access Road 1 could provide a good site for a historical marker recognizing Mr. Amos.
