Anderson Tract Mitigation Bank

Years: 1994 | Role: Event | County: Smith

Topics

Description

In 1994, the Texas Department of Transportation bought the Anderson Tract, a 2243-acre parcel located in Smith County, in the Sabine River bottomlands, close to the Little Sandy National Wildlife Refuge. This property is believed to be the first state-owned wetland mitigation bank in Texas. Banks such as these help provide conservation benefits by offsetting damage to small, scattered wetlands through protecting larger, less-fragmented, more-connected, professionally-managed acreage.

Location Notes

There is a picnic area on Texas State Highway 80 within a mile or so of the mitigation bank. While not immediately adjacent to the bank, this might be one of the more high-traffic, publicly-owned and accessible nearby marker sites.
