Description

Alvin Robert “A.R.” Cahn, Ph.D., worked as a Professor of Zoology at the University of Illinois, and in the Biological Readjustment Division at the Tennessee Valley Authority, and is known most widely for his herpetological research. However, early in his career, he filed important baseline surveys of avian life in Caddo Lake and coastal areas of Texas while a graduate teaching assistant at Texas A&M University (1919-22). Two key articles include “Summer Birds in the Vicinity of Lake Caddo, Harrison County, Texas” in the Wilson Bulletin (1921), and “Notes on the Summer Avifauna of Bird Island, Texas, and Vicinity” in The Condor (1922).

Location Notes

A.R. Cahn's early field research in the Caddo Lake area, and his notice of its biological richness and merit for protection suggests that it would be good to recognize him with a marker in the area. A sign at the entrance to the Caddo Lake State Park headquarters, which has high visitation and dates to the CCC era, would be one candidate location.
