Alice Cashen

Alice Cashen was an accomplished English teacher in the Batson (1931-41) and Beaumont (1941-75) public schools. She also played a major role in the creation of the Big Thicket National Preserve (1974). Considered the “mother of the Big Thicket” by Archer Fullingim, Cashen brought together interests in the history, folklore and ecological value of the area. She helped organize the Big Thicket Museum in Saratoga, was a founder and charter member of the Big Thicket Association, and served on the board of the East Texas Historical Society.
